ELMER GANTRY

SYNOPSIS:
Travelling salesman Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster) is as immoral as he is handsome. When he comes across a revival meeting and discovers that a man can hustle money as easily in a tent-show as in a bar, he is happy to become an evangelist. As he joins forces with Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons), Elmer finds his gift of the gab helps him deliver the kind of devil-bashing oratories that bring him fame and fortune. But when an old flame (Shirley Jones) appears in town, he must confront some more earthly demons.

"One of the pivotal Burt Lancaster films, Elmer Gantry (1960) - even the title is evocative, lyrical, mysterious, complex….- delivers a character study which Robert Duvall tried to match with The Apostle (1998). No contest. Richard Brooks' script and direction lead us into temptation and delivers us from evil (Elmer's not so lucky) - but with such bravura writing that it is often breathtaking. Not only is the script well structured, it has dialogue that spews out of Lancaster like lava. This blissful marriage of writing, acting and directing is enhanced by the production credits (design, music, sound) and the unexpected casting of Jean Simmons - who turns out to be perfect. Like a brilliant short story, Elmer Gantry is at once poetic, dramatic, amusing and bewildering, a perfect movie for repeated viewing over a few decades. When I first saw it, I was a teenager; it seemed very different then, although just as riveting."
