FOX BACKLOT: PREVIEW OF GRAND OPENING

LIGHTS! CAMERA! AUSTRALIA!
On Sunday November 7, 1999, Fox Studios Australia opens its Backlot to the public - a much heralded and often controversial project. It's a big night of big stars and a big show. If you're not on the guest list, see it on the Nine Network - or follow it through the Telstra webcast, where Andrew L. Urban conducts 'red carpet' interviews as the guests arrive - and also looks behind the scenes.

Hugh Jackman flies in from the set of The X Men in Los Angeles to compere the show, Kylie Minogue returns from London and Rupert Murdoch makes a personal appearance….

Lights! Camera! Chaos!

Tommy Tycho - the 71 year young Maestro - leads a 50 piece orchestra, which alone is something of an attraction. (Last year his schedule ran to 56 concerts, this year a similar number.) The Maestro-led Sydney International Orchestra accompanies the 100 dancers and performers in a tribute to Hollywood's golden age - and a special nod to Rodgers and Hammerstein - in a show watched by 4,000 guests at the studio - plus millions at home around Australia and the world, both on tv and on the internet.

Musical numbers include themes from Titanic and Star Wars as well as Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet; Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Barrie Kosky are just three of the Australians who have helped create this new Backlot. Cartoonist Rod Clement, for example, not only designed the costumes and masks for Lights! Camera! Chaos! he also made many of the sculptures around the Backlot.

"Multi million dollar gala event"

Kylie Minogue's performance will be the first of several surprises (we won't spoilt them here) and the official opening will be performed by none other than Rupert Murdoch himself. Lachlan Murdoch and dozens of other key Fox / News Ltd executives will be mingling with the celebrities in the multi million dollar gala event.

The giant stage - 40 meters in diameter - will be lit from a special webbed roof and the finale will be a pyrotechnic extravaganza.

The Grand Opening will mark the launch of the Backlot, a public entertainment area unlike any other studio tour. As we reported some weeks ago, "While the biggest attraction of the Backlot will no doubt be the physically immersing, Titanic The Experience, the heart and soul of the public tour will unquestionably be the Barrie Kosky/Baz Luhrmann live show, Lights! Camera! Chaos! a 25 minute mixture of circus, burlesque, musical and stunts, in which the audience play extras in the making of a movie musical." FULL STORY
