TROPFEST 2000: THE WINNERS, THE NIGHT

Despite the upsurge of dramatic subjects in this year's entries (354 in total), it was a comedy, Old Man (pic), which won the Tropfest 1st prize, as well as the Best Comedy award, with its veteran actor Basil Clark taking home the Best Actor Award.

Directed by Robin Feiner and Jesse Gibson, Old Man was shot on digi video. The Tropicana Award was shared between the popular mockumentary, How Far Can You Wear You Underpants From the Beach (John Biggins) and The Island (Kieran Darcy-Smith).

Tropfest 2000 was screened by satellite at cafes around Australian capital cities tonight (27/1/2000) and also at Sydney's Domain, where some 65,000 people enjoyed live entertainment from 3pm.

This year the event was WEBCAST live through digitalone and Telstra, with Urban Cinefile as guest presenters, conducting interviews with special guests such as Ewan McGregor (pic), John Leguizamo, David Wenham, Mary Koustas, Tom Keneally and his film producer daughter Jane, some of the filmmakers, as well as Tropfest founder JOHN POLSON.

Best Screenplay: Noise, Chris Benz, Ian Coler, Lou Gartland, Kate Hall, Sally Isaac, David Michod

2nd Prize:
Meeting Misty Rain, directed by Justin Kurzel

Best Actress: Essie Davis, Meeting Misty Rain

Best Cinematography:
Desy, Andrew Birbara

Best original Score:
Brother, Robert Moss
