BIG DADDY: DVD
SYNOPSIS:
Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler) is a qualified lawyer who hasn’t found any direction in
his life. He sleeps all day, orders take-out food incessantly and is generally goofing
off. His girlfriend Vanessa (Kristy Swanson) challenges him to do something with his life;
and the opportunity to do that arrives in the form of Julian (Cole & Dylan Sprouse),
apparently the son of his room mate Kevin (Jon Stewart). With Kevin in China on business,
Sonny takes on Julian as his substitute father, but his new responsibilities don’t
seem to change his slacker ways. Then he meets Layla (Joey Lauren Adams), the sister of
Kevin’s fiancee.
"While there may not be much by way of additional
features, Big Daddy is a surprisingly fun way to spend a Saturday
afternoon. It's schmaltzy, contrived, unbelievable and
predictable, yet immensely watchable. Excellent quality and sound
in the widescreen or full screen formats make for quality
viewing, while good packaging allows for easy storage. It's a
shame there's no director's commentary, as this kind of goofy
comedy would benefit from some further insight into its making.
I'm not sure exactly what is Adam Sandler's appeal, but his
deadpan delivery and understated responses are without doubt the
key to his success. I flicked to the German language option just
for fun and suggest this as a desperate measure in the wee hours
after a late party - or for those of you whose first language is
German. Snadler's German seems perfect. As for the cute little
boy (played delightfully by identical twins Cole & Dylan
Sprouse – born in Italy and raised in Southern California),
he will capture your heart. There are two trailers (US and
international), a very short (and dissatisfying) behind the
scenes featurette with a couple of interview grabs with Adam
Sandler and director Dennis Dugan and music videos by Sheryl Crow
and energetic Garbage. You can jump to the scene of your choice,
or just relax and chill out watching the movie – on your own
or with a group of friends who have never wanted kids."
