BREAKING THE WAVES

SYNOPSIS:
In a remote, close-knit, deeply religious community on the north-east coast of Scotland, young Bess, naive and innocent, falls in love with an offshore oil rig worker. Despite community opposition they marry, but soon Jan returns to the oil rig. Bess waits for him: when an accident renders Jan bedridden, he pleads that Bess prove her true love for him by making love to other men. Bess, her faith unshakable, believes her love is an all-powerful and healing force.

No synopsis can possibly do justice to von Trierís film; indeed, no mere review can - it is at once cinematic, naturalistic yet supernaturalistic, totally accessible yet unfathomable. But in (over) simplified terms, it is a grand love story about simple folk - achingly beautiful, and hauntingly painful. The acting is flawless, but it is Emily Watson who delivers the filmís emotional powder keg. The cinematography is outstanding and the setting mesmerising - all powered by a spare but powerful script. It is a true marvel of a movie.

This outstanding film is an overwhelming cinema experience which sweeps you away on all levels. The eight separate sections of the film depicting the unusual love story work to enhance rather than fragment it, each beginning with an eerily beautiful, surreal scene, described by von Trier as "Godís eye view of the landscapeÖ" At these times our senses are enhanced with the effective use of 70s songs by artists including David Bowie, Elton John and Deep Purple; highlighted by the fact that this is the only music in the film. Emily Watson is quite extraordinary, displaying vulnerability yet immense inner strength in the role. A highly emotional and satisfying film experience.
