WILD AMERICA

SYNOPSIS:
Marty (Scott Bairstow), Mark (Devon Sawa), and Marshall Stouffer (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) are three brothers in the 1960's who, went not helping their father, Marty Sr. (Jamey Sheridan) and his carburettor business, are out making home movies. While twelve-year-old Marshall must deal with being the subject of his older brothers' experimental films, he often secretly and subtly retaliates against them. When Marty is shown a professional film camera, however, he gets the idea of "shooting" wildlife and capturing America's wild animals on film before they're killed off. Their dad reluctantly agrees to let Mark tag along on Marty's adventure, but little do they, or their mother Agnes (Frances Fisher), know that Marshall is a stowaway in their truck until they're too far away to return him. From that point on, the brothers experience life on their own, as well as encounters with an alligator, moose, and a cave of hibernating bears that not only challenge their film making skills, but their safety as well.

"Three kids on an adventure. Well, it's certainly been done before and there's little originality in this true story of three disparate brothers trying to prove themselves with a 16mm camera in the wildness of America.

The fact that it's a true story does make this an interesting tale, and visually, it's intoxicating. Nature and animal lovers will enjoy it, and there are some fabulous set pieces, including the bears sequence. Once the film drifts into the Marshall/Marty bond sub-plot, it becomes a rambling and silly film, dealing with flights of fancy taken to the extreme.

Ironically, this was never Marty's story, but with young heart throb Taylor Thomas in the lead, you've got to give the guy something to do, after all. He's a passable performer but has a lot of growing up to do."
