UNDER HELLGATE BRIDGE

SYNOPSIS:
After serving a prison sentence for a crime he didn't commit, Ryan Daniels (Michael Rodrick) returns to Queens, New York. He attends the funeral of his brother Jimmy who died under Hellgate Bridge. His surviving brother Eddie (Brian Vincent) is a drug addict and dealer who appears to be heading for a similar fate. Determined to save Eddie, Ryan is drawn into conflict with local crime boss Vincent (Jonathan LaPaglia) who is now married to Ryan's former girlfriend Carla (Jordan Bayne).

"Under Hellgate Bridge is a no-nonsense revenge flick that does its job efficiently and qualifies as a rental worth the fee. Fans of hard-boiled New York crime stories should find this foray into Mean Streets territory a satisfying one. The set-up is straightforward as good guy with a bad past Ryan (Michael Rodrick) returns to the 'hood only to find it's gone to pieces during his stay in the big house. As every movie-goer is aware there are no stronger blood ties than those between New York brothers from blue collar neighbourhoods and no better motivation for revenge when those ties are threatened by sleazeball gangsters like Vincent (Jonathan LaPaglia) - especially when he's stolen your girl to boot. Rodrick is a solid hero whose chequered past and consultations with a local priest lend Ryan humanity and LaPaglia is equally effective as the not-so-goodfella. Adelaide-born LaPaglia looks amazingly like his brother Anthony. Based on this and his role in the TV series Seven Days he has a much better chance of establishing a successful long-term career than other star star siblings such as Frank Stallone, Joey Travolta or Neil Connery. The acting honours really belong to Brian Vincent who might get a call from Abel Ferrara following his dynamic turn as a junkie desperado who gets in too deep. The presence of Sopranos cast members Vincent Pastore and Dominic Chianese add extra colour to proceedings which move along swiftly and even with the odd moment of flair from director Michael Sergio. Under Hellgate Bridge is nothing we haven't seen before but it's well done and more than achieves its modest goals."
