OSCARS 2001 - THE VIEW FROM DOWN UNDER

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar to most of us) is the world’s pre-eminent peer-voting award system for anyone working in film. This year, the 73rd awards, presented by writer, actor, comedian Steve Martin, are unusual in that the only two Americans nominated for a leading role are Tom Hanks and Ed Harris. The same number as Australia: Russell Crowe and Geoffrey Rush. This gives Australians a special interest in the proceedings. Here is our comprehensive guide – with an Australian perspective.
