AUSTRALIA AT CANNES 2001
Andrew L. Urban talks to Baz Luhrmann and Nick Giannopoulos, two of the
Australians who have very different reasons to be excited about the Cannes Film
Festival, and previews some of the films that will be screening either in the
Festival program or at the international film market - with some exclusive
footage seen for the first time in this presentation.

Baz Luhrmann is back in Cannes, this time with the major slot of Opening Film. But this is not just a film to hang an opening party on (as happens sometimes, if the film’s distributor is prepared to pay for the lavish party). This time, the film is in Competition as well.
It’s a clever choice by the Festival, which feels - rightly - that it launched Baz on the international cinema scene. The film is a musical (rare at Cannes, Dancer in the Dark notwithstanding) with a French setting (not rare); but it’s the iconoclastic style and approach that make it right for the festival.
If it’s a commercial hit, it will also elevate Cannes once more to a special position as not only the altar of cinematic art but as one of its powerful moneymakers.
Outside the Festival, Australia is delivering comedy, drama, horror and thriller. We wish them all well.
