AUTUMN IN NEW YORK: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
In his late 40s, Will Keane (Richard Gere) is a flamboyant New York restaurateur who is addicted to women. When he meets the much younger Charlotte Fielding (Winona Ryder) his instincts warn him of the dangers, as does his old chum, Dolly (Elaine Stricht), who knew Charlotte’s mother. Indeed, so did Will; she was the one women he didn’t bed, going off instead with her friend. Now, more than 20 years later, those actions are having their repercussions come back, just as Will finds himself actually falling in love with Charlotte. But as fate would have it, Charlotte’s heart is in the deadly grip of the grim reaper.

"DVD is an intimate medium and in the privacy of home, Autumn in New York is compelling viewing. It may not totally work as a film due to the lack of credibility in the development of the relationship between Will (Richard Gere, smooth and charming) and Charlotte (Winona Ryder, delightful), but there are plenty of elements to enjoy. The film relies on the star power of Gere and Ryder, and the script panders to that.

Will is a flamboyant New York restaurateur who is an unabashed womaniser. When he meets Charlotte, 20 years his junior, he is smitten. But the past has its repercussions; besides Charlotte is suffering from a terminal illness. While it's true you should have a box of tissues handy, Autumn in New York isn't an overly weepy film. The story is more about the relationship between the two lovers and there are many wonderful moments. Anthony LaPaglia is terrific and Elaine Stricht delivers some drop dead delicious lines. Much of the enjoyment comes from the development of the relationship and Gere and Ryder make an interesting couple. In part a Cinderella story, the scene when Will takes Charlotte as his date, is totally romantic. Ryder looks fabulous while New York is mellow in her autumn dress.

There are no special features, so it's easy to just cuddle up to the one you love and watch the film!"
