FCCA AWARDS 2002 - WINNERS
Loved or hated, film critics play a role as one interface between filmmakers and the
audience. This year’s Film Critics Circle Awards reflect the high standard of
Australian filmmaking evident in films released in 2001: every nominee deserves to be a
winner, says Andrew L. Urban, from the presentation ceremony (22/2/2002).
Film critics are not generally perceived as a lovable body – or a body at all.
More like individuals whose opinions are trumpeted if favourable, derided if not. But the
Film Critics Circle of Australia is a collection of professional critics whose annual
awards recognise the best of this country’s filmmakers . . .in their opinion, of
course.
This year, it is evident that every nominee deserves the status of a winner. There is
not a single nomination that would not be received with the applause showered on the
winners at last night’s awards ceremony in Sydney’s Darling Harbour,
entertainingly hosted by James Valentine, film critic, successful radio
personality and all round clever satirist.
The evening was studded with stars as well as industry ‘players’, and the
spread of awards demonstrates the width as well as depth of filmmaking success in 2001.
