After ascending to the throne of Valusia, Kull (Kevin Sorbo) faces immediate opposition from jealous prince Taligaro (Thomas Ian Griffith) and Kull's own new bride. She is really the evil goddess Akivasha (Tia Carrere), who has recently risen in spectacular fashion from a 3,000-year entombment. Akivasha wants to take over Valusia and enslave it, making it into a living hell. Overthrown, Kull and his beautiful slave girl, Zareta (Karina Lombard), and her brother priest (Litefoot) go on a long journey to capture the Breath of Valka, which (obviously) is the only thing that can kill Akivasha.

"Prepare yourself for an onslaught of great swashbuckling fun with the big screen’s hunkiest heartthrob, the seriously handsome Kevin Sorbo (all 6’3" & 215 lbs of him), in a fable-like adventure punctuated by greed, sorcery, loyalty and lust. Make no mistake, while this may be fantasy with attitude, here is a film with excellent production values and a rousing, commanding musical score. Kevin Sorbo makes a great hero, with his square jaw, pale blue eyes, rugged dark good looks, rippling muscles and Mel Gibson voice; he is well balanced by his tall, blonde and handsome adversary Taligaro (dashingly played by Thomas Ian Griffith). As for the women - I don’t agree with Paul (below) that the beautiful slave girl (Karina Lombard) is as dull as he makes out: she manages to look demure, beautiful and desirable throughout. Admittedly, her role doesn’t give as much scope as that of Akivasha (exotic and buxom, Tia Carrere is a mesmerising temptress), and Paul apparently likes to live dangerously. The scene where Carrere relinquishes her mummified condition and returns to life, is quite extraordinary. Filled with super effects and lavish settings, Kull will sweep you into a make believe world filled with colourful characters who will amuse and entertain. The beauty of it all, is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously."

"Imagine if James Bond had been around, say 1000 years ago, and there he was, rescuing beautiful women and dispatching evil doers with sword instead of gun - and doing so with one-liners. Kull the Conqueror is a kind of medieval James Bond, and surprise, surprise, those who aren't devotees of this genre, will still find Kull irresistible. Kull is the kind of film critics love to hate, and it's easy to do so. Conan started the rage back in the early eighties, and TV's Hercules helped to rejuvenate the genre, so it was fitting that Kevin Sorbo, full of protruding muscles and glib tongue, take over where Schwarzenegger took off. The result is a pleasant surprise, because the film refuses to take itself seriously. There are some droll moments and delicious funny pieces of business that help make an otherwise silly tale a lot more entertaining. Adding to the fun is the wonderful and quite alluring Tia Carrere, who relishes her role as an evil 3,000 year old witch, brought back to live. She gives a wonderful, over-the-top performance and steals the film. Only Karina Lombard as the slave Kull falls for, is dull to the extreme. If I'd been Kull, I would have stuck with the witch and evil be damned. Beautifully shot in Slovakia, Kull is aimless fun and nothing more. Take it too seriously and you may have problems."
