9TH SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS: 2003

CHICAGO RAZZLES BUT GERE IN NEUTRAL
Clint Eastwood honoured for Life, Rachel Griffiths shares ensemble award and Chicago (but not Richard Gere) a short shoe shuffle closer to Oscar in this years Screen Actors Guild Awards from Los Angeles.

Morgan Freeman, Marcia Gay Harden, Sean Penn, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Meryl Streep taped tributes to Clint Eastwood, this year’s recipient of the Screen Actors Guild highest honour, the 39th Annual Life Achievement Award, presented on Sunday in Los Angeles (and telecast on Turner Network TV).

In the regular awards, Chicago was honoured with the Actor for a motion picture cast performance, but also individually, both Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger took home an Actor. (Feel for Richard Gere; he was overlooked when his co-star Diane Lane was nominated for Unfaithful in the Oscars, and again when Renee and Catherine were nominated for Chicago in both the BAFTAS (and Catherine won), and the Oscars: now both his women co-stars get Actor Awards. But Richard isn’t even nominated….)

The only Australian to get an Actor was Rachel Griffiths as part of the cast in Six Feet Under, which won the award For Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Picking up the mood of Chicago, The Guild also celebrated the versatility of its members with a special film montage saluting “Actors Who Sing”, introduced by three-time Actor recipient Megan Mullally.

Considering the SAG Awards are voted on by thousands of actors around America, you might think their choices are right on the money. And with final voting for Oscars closing on March 18, these results may sway a few late voters – with unknowable results.
