TITANIC: SOUNDTRACK

CD Soundtrack Review
By Lynden Barber

James Horner - best known for his Aliens and Braveheart music - has delivered a quietly sentimental orchestral score for Jim Cameron's sea-based epic that works in an acceptably subliminal manner in the film - but for my tastes, is just a little too simperingly mawkish and tastefully romantic to stand up by itself. Enya and Riverdance have a lot to answer for. And the Dubliners, and the Chieftans and ...well I'm only half kidding. If you found Cameron's use of Irish music and dancing to connote folksy bonhomie below decks just a little hokey, then the CD might strike the same way. It was Horner, remember, who put the Irish uilleann pipes into Braveheart, a film about SCOTTISH nationalism. Yes, it is a lovely instrument - but I suspect it's Irish folk's downside, its capacity for wallowing in sentiment and tendency to slip easily into the ear, that draws Horner.
