1st ANNIVERSARY: RECOGNITION, HIGHLIGHTS

Urban Cinefile was launched on the world wide web on February 28, 1997, with a global overview but a distinctly Australian accent on the world of film. That first edition, for example, featured a profile of cinematographer JOHN SEALE, a month before he won an Oscar for his work on The English Patient. We also interviewed ROLF DE HEER for his new film, Epsilon; and reviewed David Caesar’s IDIOT BOX, one of the best Australian films of the year. On this page, we look back to celebrate not only our survival, but to record the highlights – both to remember them and to point them out for those who may have missed them.

RECOGNITION:
NATIONAL LIBRARY
Urban Cinefile has been identified by the National Library of Australia as an "electronic publication of lasting cultural value for access by the Australian community now and in the future." Agreement has been reached to allow the NLA to archive the entire site on a regular basis under its PANDORA project.

PROJECT COOL AWARD
We won our first web award on our very first day on the net: February 28, 1997 – the Site of the Day Award, from Project Cool.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CAFÉ AWARD
Exactly eight months later, Urban Cinefile was named the WOW Site for November by Graphic Design Café, in recognition of excellence in Australian website development.

SUNDANCE
First with the news of Miramax acquiring US rights to The Castle (9am, 22/1/98) at 1998 Sundance Film Festival; Urban Cinefile’s Senior Contributor, Paul Fischer, was the only journalist from Australia reporting SUNDANCE

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL, 1997
