OSCARS 2005 – THE NOMINEES

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOY AS THE AVIATOR FLIES HIGH
No major surprises in this list, with Australian short, Birthday Boy, nominated for Best Short Animation as expected, The Aviator reaping 11 nominations, Finding Neverland and Million Dollar baby with seven each, Ray with six, Sideways with five – and the controversial The Passion of the Christ with three, while Fahrenheit 911 is not nominated in any category. Andrew L. Urban reports.

Anyone who has seen Sejong Park’s short, Birthday Boy, would have been quietly confident the film would be nominated for an Oscar, especially his producer Andrew Gregory and the Australian Film Television and Radio School, where he made it. The only people who are likely to be surprised as they read through the list of Oscar nominations for the 2005 presentation are Mel Gibson and Michael Moore, the makers of the two most controversial films of the past 12 months: The Passion of The Christ and Fahrenheit 911.

The Passion of The Christ was nominated for its music, cinematography and make up; Fahrenheit 911 was vying for a nomination in the Best Picture slot, a decision by the filmmakers (opting out of the doco category) that may now be seen as grossly over confident. Both films are huge box office hits, but Academy members evidently didn’t equate popularity with excellence in filmmaking.

That three of the five Best Picture contenders are biopics is a rare coincidence; but it’s perhaps the first chance for Martin Scorsese to take home an Oscar, after four previous directing nominations. But that’s nothing compared to John Williams, whose nomination for the score of Harry Potter The Prisoner of Azkaban is his 43rd – the most of any living person. (Walt Disney had 64.)

Talking of records, Les Choristes’ Best Foreign pic nod is France’s 33rd – another record.

The nominations summarise a year of mostly American filmmaking excellence, with a few foreigners squeezing in: there is Mike Leigh’s nom for directing Vera Drake, Catalina Sandino Moreno as Maria in Maria Full of Grace for acting, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Choristes and The Motorcycle Diaries, each for Best Song, the Foreign pics – and of course the Australian short, Birthday Boy.

Other Australians nominated include Cate Blanchett for her role as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator,
