Movie reviews:
PROMETHEUS 3D
(US, 2012) Dir: Ridley Scott. Stars Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron. "The film's central metaphor is about the Greek Titan Prometheus, who defies the gods by giving humans the gift of fire, for which he is horribly punished," says Scott. "When you talk about the myth on which the title is based, you're dealing with humankind's relationship with the gods - the beings who created us - and what happens when we defy them." Provocative and unexpected ..

Movie reviews:
SWERVE
(Aust, 2011) Dir: Craig Lahiff. Stars Jason Clarke, Emma Booth, David Lyons, Travis McMahon, Vince Colosimo. ".. opens with great promise, wordless scenes building intrigue and tension. A case of money, a case of drugs, an explosive device, a deserted rendezvous .. The story convulses as it unfolds, with various elements straining credulity," says Andrew. "Paul Grabowsky's edgy score is a highlight of this taut thriller that rips along like a fast train on a track to nowhere. A cop with a temper, a girl in a convertible and a stranger passing through are the main players; it all starts when a car swerves on a deserted, dusty road not far from the dead-end town of Neverest," says Louise.

Movie review:
ANTON CHEKHOV'S THE DUEL
(UK, 2010) Dir: Dover Koshashvili. Stars Andrew Scott, Fiona Glascott, Tobias Menzies. " .. once you get used to this distraction [of the English cast in 19th century Russian setting] the handsome production takes on its own sensibilities," says Andrew.

Cannes 2012:
THE WRAP
Being there was not enough - Australians had to make the sun shine at this year's Festival de Cannes, metaphorically as well as literally. Andrew L. Urban reports. (Pic. Palme d'Or winner, Michael Haneke's Amour)

UPCOMING FILMS
[Coming soon, Polisse, starring Karin Viard, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Ma´wenn. "Winner of the 2011 Cannes Jury Prize, this potent drama set in the midst of the police working in the Child Protection Unit, is gritty enough to rip us to shreds emotionally as it embraces the ups and downs, laughs at the ridiculous, winds down at the end of a tough day, deals with shattering issues and drowns in the despair of the unthinkable," says Louise. "Different stories, no through-line . but slowly this patchwork starts to form a cohesive energy and dramatic weight and draws us ever tighter to its gut wrenching centre," says Andrew.]

TOP 20

DVDS THIS WEEK
SHAME
Stars Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, Amy Hargreaves, Hannah Ware. "As tough and as emotionally challenging as his haunting 2008 debut Hunger, Steve McQueen's second feature is one that takes your breath away.. Sexual perversion is the obsession of the protagonist, who can only find pleasure from the debauched," says Louise.

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS
Documentary. "What is astonishing about the drawings discovered in the Chauvet Caves (named after the Frenchman who discovered them) in southern France is that they look much like the drawings of competent contemporary art students perhaps," says Andrew.

SAFE HOUSE
Stars Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Robert Patrick, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson. "The powerful pairing of Washington and Reynolds as the cynical and idealistic agents respectively has plenty of promise, although .. relentless and dizzying hand-held camera work intrudes," says Louise.

WEEKEND
Stars Tom Cullen, Chris New. "In an intimate exploration of its central relationship, this boy meets boy story addresses all the issues of being gay and meets them head on," says Louise.
