Movie reviews:
THE SAPPHIRES
(Aust, 2012) Dir: Wayne Blair. Stars Chris O'Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell. "A good hearted crowd pleaser that offers undemanding entertainment, The Sapphires tells the story of four aboriginal girls who leave their remote Australian home to sing for American troops in 60s war-torn Vietnam ...(but) the highs would reverberate far sweeter had they been grounded in a more credible reality ... I was disappointed," says Louise.

Movie review:
STORM SURFERS 3D
(Aust, 2012) Documentary. "As you'd expect from a film dedicated to the subject, there is an amazing amount of surfing footage, and yet the editors have managed to include telling interview footage of the two surfing greats who are the stars," says Andrew.

Movie review:
THE CAMPAIGN
(US, 2012) Dir: Jay Roach. Stars Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Sarah Baker. "A Will Ferrell flavoured satire zooped up by the added juice of Zach Galifianakis eccentricity, The Campaign provides some easy laughs and a few cutting digs about politicians," says Louise.

Not Fluffy!
"CREATIVE BUSINESS" IS NO OXYMORON
It was billed as a forum to re-examine the creative enterprise and attracted a studio full of creative and enterprising professionals in film & TV, to explore how the future should look for them. In the Romantic tradition, artists are considered to be in touch with the sublime. and a bit fluffy. Hopeless with money and no good at business. Many people still believe this. But is it true? Hosted (on Saturday, August 4) by the AFTRS Centre for Screen Business, Not Fluffy! was the title - and true to its name, there was no fluff, just hard nosed creative thinking. Andrew L. Urban and Yen Yang report.

Antenna Documentary Film Festival 2012:
UNDERCOVER IN BLOOD DIAMOND COUNTRY
Opening the 2012 Antenna Documentary Festival for its Sydney premiere will be the daring exposť from Danish director Mads Brugger, The Ambassador (Denmark, 2011). This unique and at times shocking documentary follows journalist/director Brugger who, with surprising ease, buys himself a consular posting to the Central African Republic, and with this undercover guise, investigates the country's access to 'blood' diamonds and meets murderous thugs, shady opportunists and crooked diplomats - all the while recording his dangerous encounters on hidden camera.

UPCOMING FILMS
[Coming soon, Arbitrage, starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth, Brit Marling. "The pleasures in this film come from a strong story and the well drawn characters," says Andrew. "It's a great role for Gere, who together with an outstanding cast deliver a smashing tale in which greed, appearances and success are championed over guilt, redemption and truth," says Louise.]

DVDS OUT THIS WEEK
THE RUM DIARY
Stars Johnny Depp, Giovanni Ribisi, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Rispoli. "You can smell the debauchery in this rum-soaked Caribbean paradise where truth plays tug-of-war against complacency," says Louise.

SALT OF LIFE
Stars Gianni Di Gregorio, Valeria De Franciscis, Alfonso Santagata. "Love and beautiful women are the fragrant themes of this charmer of a comedy," says Louise.

SPUD
Stars John Cleese, Troye Sivan, Jamie Royal. "..strives to be a faithful adaptation of this popular novel and comes together well in the second half," says Andrew.

BATTLESHIP
Stars Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson. "the stakes are as high as they can be, and the scale of the drama is enormous.," says Andrew

THIS MUST BE THE PLACE
Stars Sean Penn, Frances McDormand, Judd Hirsch. "It's easy to see what attracted Penn to the role of Cheyenne, although the film's entire premise is highly self indulgent," says Louise.
