Movie reviews:
AMERICAN HUSTLE
(US, 2013) Dir: David O. Russell. Stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro. "The screenplay is outstanding, taking us on an ever changing course where the dramatic scenery shifts from tense to bizarre to deadly to hilarious . not to mention a great 70s soundtrack (plus a clever underscore by Danny Elfman)," says Andrew. "A deliciously entertaining movie about the perfect con, corruption and how to survive on thin ice, American Hustle starts its hustling right from the get-go with its edgy script, winning cast and fab jazzy score," says Louise.

Movie review:
THE GILDED CAGE
(France, 2013) Dir: Ruben Alves. Stars Rita Blanco, Joaquim de Almeida, Roland Graud, Chantal Lauby, Barbara Cabrita. "A delightful clash of cultures and classes, Ruben Alves's directing debut brings a touch of Portugal to Paris, peppering his comedy of errors with endless charm and humour ... The film's success lies in its clever, funny script and beautifully judged performances by a Portuguese and French cast who bring the story and its humour to life in an authentic way," says Louise.

Winners:
SCREEN MUSIC AWARDS 2013
Moving to Sydney's glorious State Theatre for the awards ceremony, it was fitting that not only did Ashley Irwin conduct a terrific orchestra but performers Emma Birdsall and Ignatius Jones added genuine live theatre to the night, which climaxed with Caitlin Yeo winning the Feature Film Score of the Year Award for her work on Ken Mordaunt's Laos-set, The Rocket - Australia's Foreign Language Oscars entry.

Winners:
EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS

UPCOMING FILMS
[Coming later in December, Frozen, voiced by Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Ciaran Hinds. "Visually gorgeous in 3D with its winter wonderland setting, ice palaces and trees dripping with crystal icicles, this is a smoothie of a film with characters you can root for, hummable songs and a heart that is as warm as its theme is cold," says Louise.]

TOP 20
Short and sweet (or not) opinions on the most popular current releases. An easy reference for choosing which movie to see tonight or tomorrow or right now! (Occasionally we also slip in a few of the editors' favourites if they don't make the top 20)

NEW DVDS:
NOW YOU SEE ME
Stars Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Melanie Laurent. "A hugely enjoyable thriller, whose sleight of hand is both audacious and ambitious," says Louise.

TO THE WONDER
Stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem. "..an opaque and fragmented work, using insistently romantic music," says Andrew.

ELYSIUM
Stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley. "There is ample entertainment value in this sci-fi tale with star power, whose filmic references are as diverse as Metropolis and Mad Max," says Louise.

100 BLOODY ACRES
Stars Angus Sampson, Damon Herriman, Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, John Jarratt. "The elements are potentially there for a bloody good time, if gore and black comedy is your thing, yet the debut feature for Colin and Cameron Caines falls flat," says Louise.

Competition winners:
THE RAILWAY MAN
To win double inseason passes to The Railway Man, courtesy Transmission Films, we asked: Who among family and friends is devoted to a hobby and what is it? Sonya Nikadie (Vic): My hubby is devoted to his boat; which he has slaved over almost every weekend for the past 2 years and still never taken it sailing.
