Movie reviews:
BIRDMAN
(US, 2014) Dir: Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu. Stars Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Andrea Riseborough. ".. non-stop tension in this incongruous, edgy and brilliant film from Alejandro Inarritu, whose dark comic tones agitate the unfathomable world of the creative actor. It's a mind-blowing affair," says Louise. 'Surprising us most just when we think we know exactly what's coming, combining humour, pathos, drama, magic realism and a potential bag of Oscars, Birdman is virtuoso filmmaking," says Andrew.

Movie reviews & Competition:
UNBROKEN
(US, 2014) Dir: Angelina Jolie. Stars Jack O'Connell, Domhnall Gleeson. "Resilience and a willingness to forgive are the moral threads of this true-life personal story that Angelina Jolie has brought to the screen in a riveting, involving and powerful film," says Louise. "Laura Hillenbrand's exceptionally detailed and superbly written book is a vast, immersive experience; Angelina Jolie's sensitive and faithful film of it (with the help of the screenplay writers) is a visceral experience," says Andrew.

Movie review:
TAKEN 3
Dir: Olivier Megaton. Stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Jenssen, Dougray Scott, Forest Whitaker. "Cars pirouette, spin, flip and are crushed in a dramatic freeway car chase, while a nail-biting sequence involving a small plane and a black Porsche makes hearts stop. Incredible plot aside, the charismatic presence of Liam Neeson and his impenetrable sense of decency carry the film way beyond its thrilling action sequences," says Louise.

Movie review:
PAPER PLANES
(Aust, 2015) Dir: Robert Connolly. Stars Sam Worthington, Ed Oxenbould, David Wenham. "An impressionable 12 year old ready to discover the world, a grieving father intent on shutting the world out and a madcap granddad keen to embrace it are the three key characters in this rousing and heartwarming family film in which winning, losing and family are everything," says Louise.

Charlie present at the Golden Globes:
GOLDEN GLOBES 2015 - WINNERS
George Clooney, recipient of the Cecil B De Mille Lifetime Achievement Award was not the only one to proclaim Je Suis Charlie at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony, held just hours after Paris and the world turned out in force to stand up against Islamic extremists.

Awards:
AACTA INTERNATIONAL AWARDS 2015 - NOMINATIONS
Birdman leads the way in the AACTA International Awards, in a field for Best Film that includes Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game and Whiplash. The only Australian nominees are Naomi Watts (Supporting, Birdman, US) and Essie Davis (Lead, The Babadook, Aust).

Awards:
BAFTA 2015 NOMINATIONS
There are five nominees for Best Film and six for Outstanding British Film, an anomaly that underlines the British penchant for eccentricity, perhaps, reports Andrew L. Urban.

UPCOMING FILMS
[Coming later this month, Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Sienna Miller. "There are many elements to this true story about wealth, wrestling and winning but it is Steve Carell's extraordinary metamorphose as the creepy John E. du Pont, complete with unsettling gaze and manner that is the film’s most haunting element," says Louise.] Calendar of films releasing in January

Jackson; A Little Chaos, stars Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Matthias Schoenaerts; Mad Max: Fury Road, stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron; Terminator: Genisys, stars Arnold Schwarzenegger; Shaun the Sheep, from Aardman Studios;

NEW DVDS:
THE GIVER
Stars Brenton Thwaites, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep. "With consummate skill, director Phillips Noyce orchestrates all the complexities of the tale and its parallels with the state of the world, blending together its fantasy and thriller elements with a rich emotional heart," says Louise.

BOXTROLLS
Voices of Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Toni Collette. "The stop-motion animation is extraordinary, but there is something lacking in this third film from Laika Studios - heart," says Louise.

Competition winners:
HOLIDAY HORROR BLU-RAY LIBRARY
To win one of 10 Holiday Horror Blu-ray Libraries courtesy Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, we asked: What's your idea (nightmare) of a Horror Christmas Lunch? Nelle Gaye (NSW): says: Lucifer, my ex-spouse, his mother Vampira and his sister Frankenstina coming over for their usual pound of flesh. Even Santa would have Claws.
