Hollywood’s Foreign Press have nominated both Russell Crowe (for Cinderella Man) and Heath Ledger (for Brokeback Mountain) in the Best Actor category, but that’s the toughest category this year.

It’s no surprise that both Australian actors Russell Crowe and Heath Ledger are in the nominees list for Best Actor, with Ledger’s role in Brokeback Mountain certain to earn him an Oscar nomination, with or without the Golden Globes. He isn’t too bad in his other two films of the year, Casanova and The Brothers Grimm; but it’s his internalised and intense portrayal of the cowboy Ennis in Brokeback Mountain that Ledger has found the performance of his career to date.

Ang Lee’s film could well rise to the top of the awards heap, and Ledger will have contributed greatly to that acclaim. That’s not to take anything away from Jake Gyllenhaal, a brilliant young actor who is also outstanding as Ennis’ lifelong friend – and more.

Perhaps the only surprise in this list is the absence of Cinderella Man from the Best Drama category. The Awards will be presented in Hollywood on January 16, 2006.
