RATS IN THE RANKS: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
A fly on the wall documentary during Mayoral elections for Leichhardt Council in Sydney's inner West, observing the political process at local council level at close quarters. Incumbent Larry Hand is popular with the rate payers, but they don't vote for the Mayor: the 12 councillors do, and after three years of his tenure (including the first two unopposed), some of them are after the job for themselves. Can he get seven votes?

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
From the opening scenes, we know we're in for a riveting time as the camera records councillors being, variously, grubby, feisty and rule-abiding. 'Off the record'...'I didn't tell you' ... acrimony, backstabbing and petty, personal squabbles override the nobility of the human spirit here, making for a juicy - but sometimes depressing - tale of how the process of local government works. Or non-works.

The strength of the doco is in its powers of observation and the editing, all of which are made possible by the access the filmmakers were given. And what a cast! From the irrelevant to the irreverent, from the lofty to the looney, they're all here, as large as any melodrama. There's no soap that could come near this.
