I AM A SEX ADDICT: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Moments before his third wedding, Caveh Zahedi reveals his obsession with prostitutes. He retraces his sexual history, which has left several relationships in tatters as he tries to justify his fetish to his girlfriends.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
At one stage, Caveh Zahedi, the actor whose addiction is the subject of this er ... documentary, revelas how he visited every brothel in Los Angeles. At first he was excited just to touch the receptionist's breast and get thrown out. But eventually even this wasn't exciting enough for him. Caveh's rather flat, frank and funny narration glues the film together and gives it the flavour of a strangely addictive piece of home video - with re-enactments to spice it up. But it somehow manages to defeat its sleazy elements - perhaps by the matter of fact nature of the presentation.

Caveh Zahedi (son of Iranian migrants) has a slight body and one of those faces that don't threaten you, a plain yet abundantly interesting face and dark curly hair. The underdog label sits well on him, an unassuming, hapless fellow, we thing the moment we see him. His clever film uses little tricks and animations - and some pomp-deflating narration - to make us feel comfortable with the unusual topic.

The women playing out the roles of his exes are all credible and the film has enough pace to make it lively. And while the film is superficially amusing in a gee whiz kind of way, the simulated sex scenes are almost banal - unlike a porn film, where the sex is intended to arouse, here, these scenes are shot as if they were handshakes between the characters.

In that respect, the film actually triggers a variety of private responses in the viewer about the aspects of sex that torment Caveh. Interesting and unique, certainly not predictable, with a surprisingly moving aspect to the final scenes.
