KNIFE IN THE WATER: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
A married couple (Leon Niemczyk, Jolanta Umecka ) on their way to a sailing weekend invite a young hitchhiker (Zygmunt Malanowicz ) to join them. In the confined space of the small yacht, macho rivalry and sexual tension soon turn to hostility and eventually violence.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Knife In The Water is a claustrophobic, slow-burning expose of jealousy, spite and eroticism. It's Roman Polanksi's first milestone movie, made in 1962, and the only film he made in Poland prior to emigrating to America. It was nominated for an Oscar in 1964, but the Best Foreign Language Award that year went to Fellini's fabulous 8 1/2 . And Cleopatra lost to Tom Jones for Best Film... I mention these as the context in which Knife in the Water began to seep into international cinema culture consciousness.

Keep an eye on some of the long, single uncut shots Polanski uses, adding intensity to the intimacy of the story. And consider the technical challenge of filming much of the action on a small yacht. The film was as revolutionary as the French New Wave of the previous decade, with a corresponding flaunting of the filmmaking mores and rules that guided the likes of Cleopatra and Tom Jones, and with a raw energy that excited cinema lovers around the world. Including a teenage me, on whom it made a big impression. That was 40-odd years ago but it retains all its power.
