RISE: BLOOD HUNTER: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
After writing a front page feature about the Gothic underworld, Los Angeles reporter Sadie Blake (Lucy Liu) wakes up in a morgue to find herself a member of the undead, the victim of a brutal vampire ritual. Trying desperately to fight off her thirst, Sadie prowls the dark city streets, armed with a crossbow and hell-bent on slaying the twisted vampires that made her this way. After they cross paths and he mistakenly thinks she is responsible for his daughter's death, Detective Rawlins (Michael Chiklis) forms an uneasy alliance with Sadie in the hunt for the ringleader, Bishop (James D'Arcy). But Bishop has complicated things for them.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Lucy Liu is always welcome on my screen, an actress who marries intelligence with feminine mystique, bundled with a dry wit and the ability to make action roles credible. Like here, as Sadie the writing lady, getting caught up in the dark and bloody - and sexually charged - underworld of the undead vampires. Who all look like normal human beings, except the women have blood red lipstick.

The story is one of simple revenge: Sadie is mad as hell at having been turned into an undead, and she aims to get her revenge. On the way, she gets raped, beaten up, misled and betrayed, and even when she comes across a cop whose daughter's had the same treatment, she finds herself unable to convince him that she's on his side. She gets shot and he puts her in handcuffs - but cuffs her in front so when she pees she can wipe.

The screenplay has some stretches of quality dialogue, but there are some cluttered scene juxtapositions that make little sense. Still, this is a supernatural thriller, and fans will want blood. The film opens with a teaser as Sadie lures a beautiful young hooker to a mansion where she - the hooker - ends up naked and hanging from her feet. In comes a wheelchair bound old geezer and after giving Sadie an address, orders her to leave. The deal is done. Sadie is on the trail of Bishop (James D'Arcy) who 'did this to her'.

Gloomy images and a serrated score keep things gothic as the blood letting flows.
