HUNT FOR HMAS SYDNEY, THE: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
The wreckage of HMAS Sydney, sunk off the West Australian coast in 1941, has at last been found. The Sydney's entire crew of 645 went down with the ship in the Indian Ocean and its location has been a mystery for 66 years. A dedicated search team set off determined to find it. The story of the discovery includes the history of the Sydney and German raider Kormoran, along with interviews with bereaved family members, naval personnel, historians, and those who made the search happen with their determination to bring closure. It also includes an animated segment showing the battle between the rival ships based on evidence gleaned from German survivors.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Some 25 books have been published (how many more written but unpublished?) on the mystery of the HMAS Sydney, which seemingly disappeared in World War II. Theories and fantasies, all. Finally, the ship that scarred 645 Australian families with the death of a loved one and many more friends, is found and closure is possible. Not just for them of course, but fore the whole nation.

This documentary fuses the factual and emotional landscape of the story in an engaging way and puts it all into context. Above all, it gives us a chance to witness the moment of discovery aboard the Geosounder for the search and the discovery. "We just found Sydney ...it's absolutely crystal clear," are the words that mark the moment, and it seems odd that it IS so clear, after 66 years of utter mystery. How it was found and the impact of the finding are part of this film.

An important historical record, but also a human story of tragic proportions, the film goes on to seek answers to the many questions around the incident. It's a mystery story and an adventure rolled into one.
