ON MOVIES
A film journalist since 1985, Andrew was Australian Bureau Chief for Screen International and later for Moving Pictures International, both London based trade weeklies. In 1997 he and his wife Louise launched Australia’s pre-eminent online weekly movie magazine, www.urbancinefile.com.au reviewing all the movies, interviewing dozens of stars and filmmakers. Since 2005, Andrew has presented Movies Now, his movie appreciation course for Sydney University’s Centre for Continuing Education.

Andrew knows the people and the business of movies as well as being a keen observer of cinema. He reveals his experiences as a movie critic (how it works) with personal anecdotes and illustrates his entertaining presentation with a selection of clips from his personal library. (Subject to availability of DVD projection facilities.)

ON THE FESTIVAL DE CANNES
The first Festival de Cannes Andrew covered as a film journalist was in 1986, when Bruce Beresford’s The Fringe Dwellers was in the Competition. He and a small fly-in team published colour dailies, a remarkable effort fraught with hazard but rewarded with success. He was then the first Australian journalist to file stories from the Festival (for The Australian). Andrew went on to cover 20 Festivals, both for the business dailies and also interviewing stars for consumer publications back home in Australia.

Countless colourful stories (some about stars, some about the parties, etc) make up his presentation, which includes a lighthearted survival guide to the Festival and other tips.

ON FRONT UP
Andrew is the creator/interviewer of Front Up, the prime time social documentary program on SBS TV (1991 – 2004) in which he meets people at random in the streets of Australia and has a conversation about their life experiences.

I work as an ambulance officer, because I enjoy the interaction with people from all walks of life. I have found your program challenging, and I like the set of 3 principles that you enunciate in getting the best out of people. Particularly, "never assume anything". I have found that I have dug a bit of a hole for myself in my dealings, if I lose sight of this ideal, and it is nice to be reminded at times. Thanks for your gem.  - Neil Tyson

We love Front Up in our house. Andrew Urban is the best interviewer on television. - David Eldridge

I admire the way Andrew draws people out and gets them answering the most personal questions. I also admire the way he is completely non-judgmental about peoples' comments, behaviour etc. - Cynthia Smith

Andrew’s presentation reveals the secrets of his successful interviewing techniques, the unusual story of how the show came to be, how he ‘worked’ the streets – all illustrated with a selection of interviews. (Subject to availability of DVD projection facilities.)
